Opportunities to Access Funds
There are several different ways for civil society organizations to become involved in applying for and implementing Global Fund grants: as members of Country Coordinating Mechanisms; as Principal Recipients (PRs); or as Sub-Recipients (SRs) of Global Fund grants.
Possible entry points for civil society involvement are outlined in the Global Fund Grant Cycle. The Strategy for the Global Fund: Accelerating the Effort to Save Lives is the strategy guiding all activities of the Global Fund and includes a number of strategic directions relevant to civil society organizations, including initiatives aimed at strengthening civil society participation and vulnerable communities throughout the Global Fund grant cycle.
The Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) is responsible for grant application and grant implementation oversight at the national level. The CCM can include government, UN agencies, private businesses, civil society organizations and organizations representing people living with these diseases. The Global Fund has produced Guidelines on the Purpose, Structure, Composition and Funding of Country Coordinating Mechanisms and Requirements for Grant Eligibility; CSAT has highlighted sections of the guidelines that are particularly relevant for civil society organizations.
Practical information on CCMs for civil society organizations and related grant application and management information are available in Tips and Tools. General information about CCMs is also available on the Global Fund website.
